In Home Custom Shutter Design We use proprietary software on a laptop computer in your home to design your shutters. It allows us to maximize the design features without exceeding the manufacturer’s specifications. On the spot we will give you a computer printout of the custom shutters that have been designed just for you. The printout displays all the details of your shutters including, number of panels, louvers, colors, divider rails etc. A sample of the quote you will receive is attached. Click to see a sample of the custom quote you will receive. A big issue with shutter design is how wide you want the panel to be or how many panels you want in your window. This is a critical design issue. Some dealers only sell one type of shutter so they skip over this critical question because their one shutter is very limited in panel size (Polywood for example). We tend to look at the customer’s desires and recommend a shutter that fits their needs rather than try to shoehorn everyone into a one-size-fits-all shutter approach. We carry numerous shutters from a variety of manufactures for just that reason. We want to sell you the shutter that best meets your needs. Some customers prefer narrow panels because it’s the classic shutter look. Others want the widest panel possible to take advantage of greater view through the shutter and to let more light in the space. We carry shutters that will accommodate every design requirement. One of the most basic questions in shutter design is how to mount the shutter. This is a function of the depth of the opening, how the opening is finished, whether the windows tilt in for cleaning and the shutter you select. Most customers prefer an inside mount if possible. The most basic issue is louver clearance and whether the louver size you select will fit in the opening and not hit the any part of the window. If there is sufficient louver clearance, the next thing we look at is how the opening is finished. If the opening is cased in wood and if there is sufficient louver clearance, we can use a Direct Mount where we mount the shutter hinge and panel directly to your window jamb. This is the most custom looking installation and preserves the beauty of your existing wood trim. It’s a very difficult installation which requires extremely accurate measuring and experienced installers. Most shutter dealers won’t attempt a Direct Mount installation because they are afraid they will mess it up and end up having to re-make the shutters at their own expense. We have done Direct Mounts for years and are very comfortable with them. If your opening has enough depth for an inside mount but is finished with drywall, with or without a window sill, we can use an inside mount Z Frame. This frame adds the trim the builder left off and looks fantastic. Beware of shutter dealers that say they will do an inside mount or Direct Mount but will actually mount an L Frame inside the opening. This is a horrible design. For one thing, the frame makes the shutter panel smaller than it needs to be so you are limiting your glass area unnecessarily. The biggest problem with it is the fact that the frame has to be made smaller than the opening so they can square the shutter in the opening. This leaves a gap between the side of the opening and the frame which they typically fill with caulk or extra trim. If your window doesn’t have enough depth to mount inside the opening, we would typically mount an L Frame on the trim. This typically occurs with casement windows which are common in many older and high end homes. Many customers are concerned this won’t look good but not to worry. It looks fine and it’s the only way to mount a shutter on this type of window. It’s really quite common. We try to mount the frame so we leave some of the trim exposed around the shutter frame. This looks the best and preserves some of the beautiful window trim. Some customers request that we cover all of the trim but this creates several issues. For one, it makes the shutter larger than it needs to be and therefore, more expensive. Depending on the width of the trim, it sometimes creates louver clearance issues which forces us to add spacers behind the frame extending the shutter depth more into the room. We discourage covering all of the trim on an outside mount. If your windows tilt-in for cleaning as many replacement windows do, we discourage an inside mount frame. Most inside mount frames will permanently block the tilt-in feature of the window. Some customers still insist on an inside mount frame and we will agree if they understand they will never be able to use the tilt-in feature of their windows. Regardless of your window design, rest assured we will consider all options and present you with our expert recommendations based on years of experience and thousands of shutter installations. |
